THE PLEIN AIRE
Mary Rose Holmes
Indian Rocks Beach, FL
These award-winning artists have caught the attention of prestigious international art exhibitions, museums, and film makers - but the locals here admire them the most.
The artists prefer to set up with their easels and umbrellas along the beach or Gulf Boulevard wearing flowing skirts and sun hats to paint "en plein aire" - a French expression meaning "in the open air." And even though the women have become Indian Rocks Beach celebrities for their devotion to "saving our cottages," folks that stop to chat about their impressionist-style paintings find these delightful women just as charming as their work.
The vivid color, light reflections, and character of their oil paintings provide an emotional and historical connection to this endearing place.
